Summer Camp 2011       $400 per week (Sibling discount for additional children per family $300 per child)

summer camp

We offer 2 types of programs for our Summer Golf instruction; we have a Summer Camp and a Summer Academy.  The Summer Camp runs every week usually starting the 3rd week in June and continues until the week before Labor Day.

The Summer Camp sessions consist of a 4 day week, Tuesday thru Friday and the hours are 9am – 1:30 pm and lunch, drinks and snacks are included.  The age requirements for the Summer Camp are 8-14 years old.

In this program, the first 2 days are purely instructional where we cover long swing, short swing, chipping, putting and sand bunker play.  We also have discussions on rules, golf etiquette and golf history.  The third day of the camp is designated as a skills challenge day where all the children are competing in different events with the goal of scoring as many points as they can.  On the fourth day, I set up a mini stroke play tournament using the chipping area and the practice putting green and each child has their own scorecard and is responsible for keeping their own score.  We take their point totals from the third day and subtract that total off their stroke play tournament and we give prizes for the top 3 contestants.  We also always give a prize to the last place player as a best effort award as well.  The final scores are posted on our scoreboard in a fantastic calligraphy display and the kids love to see their name on the scoreboard and it really gives them the feel of tournament play.  We also take photographs of the kids and send them to all the parents through email.  The children learn so much during the 4 day session not only about the golf swing but also about respect to others, golf etiquette, and golf history.  We do have make-up days due to inclement weather but not if your child misses a session due to personal reasons.  Just a reminder to the parents, it is highly recommended that you apply plenty of sunscreen on your child before dropping them off since we are outside the entire session and also make sure they are dressed properly as far as being warm or cool enough. Please include some kind of rain protection when forecasted.  We do continue the sessions if it is a light drizzle and to ease your concerns, we have one of the best Doppler radar lightning systems located in our pro shop and anytime there is lightning present within 10 miles of the golf course, we immediately bring the children indoors.  For those children who do not have golf clubs, no worries, we have all the equipment needed however, it is extremely important to make sure your child has a golf glove for the opposite dominant hand.  If your junior is right-handed, a left-handed glove is needed.  If your junior is left-handed, a right-handed glove is needed.  I can’t stress enough the importance of the glove because the children’s skin is so sensitive and we will be hitting a tremendous amount of golf balls during the week.  The worst thing that can happen is if your child develops a blister and that usually happens on the first day of camp and then the rest of the week will be painful for them to even grip a golf club.  Junior Golf Gloves are available in our Pro Shop as well as any other golf equipment for purchase.

Summer Academy 2011    $169 per week (Sibling discount for additional children per family $125 per child)

The Summer academy also starts the 3rd week in June and runs until the week before Labor Day and the session hours are from 10am-12 noon.  Lunch is not included but we do provide plenty of cold water and snacks for the kids.  This instruction is a little less intense than the Summer Camp and is perfect for the child who wants to learn about golf but doesn’t want to endure the longer day session.  We cover the same material as the Summer Camp but obviously on a shortened version due to less time available.  I always group the children according to age and always try to accommodate keeping friends and siblings together if requested.

The First Tee Program of Metropolitan New York

The First Tee of Metropolitan New York is a nationwide program that was designed to teach children life skills in addition to learning about golf.  Since I had been doing all the youth programs already at Mohansic, I thought wouldn’t it be great to incorporate the First Tee Program into my program which I had done previously.   I am proud and honored to announce that Mohansic Golf Course is the only participant of The First Tee Program in Westchester County and that I have been trained and certified to coach and participate in the program.  Some of the areas of life skills that are covered are:

Interpersonal skills which deals with meeting, communicating, and interacting with others showing respect.

Self-management which is maintaining a positive attitude, controlling thoughts and emotions.

Goal setting which is assessing one’s abilities and setting realistic goals under one’s control and creating a plan.

Resistance skills which is resolving conflicts and appreciating diversity, making healthy choices and being a mentor.

It is so important for children to develop social skills at a young age which they will carry with them their whole life.  Many of the life skills lessons that are experienced in my program will benefit the children dealing with everyday situations off the golf course.  For more information, visit The First Tee website at www.thefirsttee.org
